The Sir Douglas Wadley Stakes Handicap, Club Conrad QTIS Added Stakes Handicap, Marco Polo Handicap, T J Smith and Brisbane Treasury Casino Cup

It was a beautiful day of racing today at Eagle Farm with a quality field of horses. The Sir Douglas Wadley Stakes Handicap was won by Chris Munce aboard Our Rio followed by Kas Nediym and Con's Amy for third.

Warrior Trader came second for jockey Chris Munce and Gold Coast trainer Maryann Thexton. Bails ridden by Darren Gauci came third.

It was the 28th running of the T J Smith that saw the Bruce McLachlan trained Picaday win the last 2 year old Group 1 for the season. Picaday was ridden by Scott Seamer and gave him his third win for the day. Promoted, ridden by Michael Rodd, came second and Ambulance, trained by John Hawkes and ridden by Darren Gauchi, came third.

Bruce McLachlan was breathing a little easier when correct weight was announced for his winner even though there was a protest lodged by fourth against third which later was dismissed.

Bruce McLachlan said after the race that "The T J Smith is a great race to win and is a marvelous stepping stone to win other great Group 1 races." Picaday is Bruce McLachlan's first Group 1 winner out of his Caloundra stable.

The race that all were waiting for, the Group 1 Treasury Casino Brisbane Cup, run over 3200 metres was marred by tragedy. The clear favourite, the Jon Collins trained Maguire, broke down at the 1200 meter mark. Sadly the horse could not be saved and had to be put down when his offside hind leg broke. Jockey Chris Munce escaped unscathed. The 6 year old gelding had 39 starts for 9 wins, 2 seconds and 3 thirds earning in excess of $500,000 in prize money.

Gai Waterhouses's 3 year old cold Platinum Scissors was scratched as it was sore in the hind quarters after running sixth in the Rough Habit at Eagle Farm on the 24th of May. Sadly her other runner in the race, Corporate Queen, was pulled up at the winning post by Corey Brown as the 4 year old mare bled.

The race was won by Piachay, a 5 year old gelding by Danasinga. The win gave jockey Glen Boss two wins in the two most important Brisbane Winter Carnival races; The AAMI Stradbroke and the Treasury Casino Brisbane Cup.

County Tyrone, ridden by Jimmy Cassidy came second and Homewrecker ridden by Greg Childs and trained by Ray Lawson came third. The Clarry Conners trained Rose Archway came bolting home for fourth.
